********************************************************************************************************************************Merseyside Open Fencing Tournament
Chris Steve and Paul competed at the event.
The team arrived to see a very large entry of 91 foilists. The journey was uneventful
for Paul who though that he had been teleported there, to the sounds of Steve's
dulcet tones, we know about his wittering.
You could only describe the huge sports
hall as “packed”. Teesside Fencing Club had set camp in an apparently empty
corner, only to find that in minutes fencing bags and people surrounded us.
Despite this Steve kept his position by ensconcing his butt in his deckchair.
After a good warm up the competition
started with 2 pooling rounds followed by direct eliminations. We progressed
through the pooling rounds with mixed results but nonetheless satisfactory
results.
We all got through the first round of
direct eliminations uneventfully with Chris winning 15-9, Steve 15-11, and Paul
15-5. At the now much harder
second round Chris was knocked 15-3 and Steve out with a 15-7. Paul had a hard comeback from 10-13 to get
a last hit win on Alex Williams 15-14.
So Paul through to the final 32 fencers, to meet his nemesis Nick (Lord)
Stoke. Nick getting a bye through
the first rounds was fresh and certainly the more skilled fencer. Paul making a
bit of a comeback towards the end of the bout, but it was too little too late,
losing 15-10.
So shattered, it was homeward bound, with
Steve twittering Chris being dad driver, and Paul in between bouts of sleep and asking
“are we nearly there?”, and not even a pizza stop ;-(
